Reason Behind the Price Cut
The move comes after the GST Council, chaired by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, revised the tax slabs for SUVs. As per the new structure, vehicles powered by petrol, LPG, or CNG with engine capacity below 1,200cc and length under 4,000mm, and diesel vehicles up to 1,500cc and 4,000mm, will now attract 18% GST.
Larger vehicles—those above 1,200cc in petrol or 1,500cc in diesel and exceeding 4,000mm in length—will be taxed at 40%.
Tata Motors Also Cuts Prices
A day before Mahindra’s announcement, Tata Motors also revealed price cuts across its portfolio, effective from September 22, 2025. Its entry-level hatchback Tiago is now cheaper by ₹75,000, while the compact sedan Tigor gets a reduction of ₹80,000. The Altroz hatchback sees the steepest cut among small cars, with a drop of ₹1.10 lakh.
Among SUVs, the Punch is now cheaper by ₹85,000, while the popular Nexon receives a massive cut of ₹1.55 lakh. Tata’s mid-sized Curvv gets a reduction of ₹65,000, and premium SUVs Harrier and Safari become cheaper by ₹1.40 lakh and ₹1.45 lakh, respectively.
Impact on Customers
The revised GST structure, which will come into effect from September 22, 2025, coinciding with the start of Navratri, is expected to boost automobile sales across India. For SUV enthusiasts, this is a golden opportunity to buy their dream cars at reduced prices.
