In this modern age where technology connects the world within seconds, there are still some communities that remain hidden from the eyes of the world. One such fascinating group is the Korowai Tribe of Indonesia’s Papua province. For thousands of years, this tribe lived in complete isolation, away from human contact.
Life Among the Trees
Unlike other communities, the Korowai Tribe people don’t build their homes on the ground. Instead, they construct unique treehouses 10 to 50 meters above the ground, supported by strong branches. To an outsider, their homes may look like scenes from a movie, but for them, it’s a way of survival. Staying high above the ground protects them from enemy tribes and dangerous wild animals.
Discovery of the Korowai Tribe
Until the 1970s, the outside world had no idea about their existence. Some even believed that they might be the only humans living in that part of the earth. They never visited cities, never bought goods from markets, and lived completely off nature. Fishing, hunting, and gathering forest produce are the main parts of their daily lives. For the Korowai, the forest is not just a home—it’s their entire world.
Contact With the Outside World
In recent decades, a few groups of the tribe have begun interacting with outsiders, including tourists and missionaries. They have also been featured in documentaries like First Contact and Human Planet, which gave the world a glimpse into their lifestyle. However, despite limited exposure, they continue to preserve their traditions, culture, and identity.
Small in Number, Strong in Culture
Also known as Kolufu, the Korowai tribe lives in the southeastern region of Papua. Their population is estimated to be around 4,000–4,400 people. Even with such a small number, they have safeguarded their customs and unique way of living for centuries. Their lifestyle shows how humans can adapt and thrive by living in harmony with nature.
A Lesson for the Modern World
The Korowai people teach us an important lesson—while most of us depend on technology and modern comforts, they prove that a simple, sustainable life close to nature can also be safe, happy, and fulfilling. Even after meeting the outside world after 55,000 years, they remain deeply connected to their forests and traditions.
